Cold Email Subject Lines That Get Opened (Without Sounding Like a Pitch)
June 24, 2026 · 3 min read
A cold email subject line has exactly one job: get the email opened without screaming "this was sent to 10,000 people." That's it. It is not the place to pitch, sell, or summarize the whole offer.
What gets deleted
- Quick question
- Partnership opportunity
- Boosting your revenue
- Re: (when there was no prior thread)
What gets opened
- lowercase + specific — '{company}'s outbound'
- references a real signal — 're: your SDR hire'
- low-commitment — '2-min teardown?'
Here is the test: if the subject line looks like it was sent to 10,000 people, recipients know — and they delete. Generic equals mass equals ignore.
Write the subject line for one human, not a list. The more it reads like a note from someone who actually looked at their company, the more it gets opened.
